In his book Gimme Indie Rock: 500 Essential American Underground Albums, Andrew Earles says that “To outsiders, neophytes and non-fans, the noise-rock subgenre of post-hardcore/indie rock appeared to be a rather one-dimensional, testosterone-fueled boys’ club.” That, of course, isn’t true — which Earles acknowledges. By the nature of being a style of music embraced by outcasts and miscreants, rather than privileged insiders, noise rock has seen a wildly diverse parade of musicians over the years from all corners of the world. And it doesn’t hurt that making noise doesn’t require a major label budget. “It’s easy for anyone to strum open strings while turning a tuning peg or stick screwdrivers under the guitar’s bridge to find an interesting sound,” Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore told The Guardian in 2017. “You can be experimental without having money.”

Rescuers in southern Spain say that the frantic effort to reach a two-year-old boy who fell into a narrow, deep borehole seven days ago has again been slowed by difficult terrain.

The team anxiously wait to hear what the work crew discover, and the bad news comes quickly. “We’re not gonna oscillate on the can anymore,” they’re told, after it’s concluded that the borehole is caving in on itself. Most of Climeworks’s 60 employees work in a big industrial space in downtown Zurich, on two floors of a low-slung building that the company sublets from a German aerospace firm. Manufacturing operations are on the ground floor; the research labs are upstairs, along with a small suite of shared offices, a hallway kitchen and a hangout area. The place has the stark, casual feel of a tech start-up, with one exception: The walls are lined with oversize photos of pivotal moments in Climeworks’s young history — its ungainly early prototypes; the opening of the first Hinwil plant that collected CO₂ for the greenhouse.

The World Bank has even sought to cost the water-related SDGs. It estimated that, to “achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all” and “achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation for all and end open defecation” would need $114bn a year, 69% of it spent on sanitation. So to provide access to drinking water for the whole world would cost not much more than $30bn a year, or roughly the size of the defence budget in, say, Italy or Brazil.

In terms of vibration, the pneumatic drill had levels that were about five times higher than the electric drill. Regarding noise, the mean level for the electric drill was a time-weighted average of 102 decibels with a peak of 117.7 dB, compared with 116.2 dBA and a peak of 130.4 dB, respectively, for the pneumatic drill.

Life not just surviving but thriving in such extreme environments are referred to as “extremophilic”, but perhaps that term is a bit of a misnomer. After all, year by year, the number of new species found in these extreme environments rises considerably, which makes their presence in the strangest of nooks ever more expected and, well, normal. Those environments may be inhospitable to life we can see with our eyes, but it’s increasingly becoming clear that we’re in the minority here – fragile, larger lifeforms, wandering about on a planet that doesn’t belong to us as much as we would like to think.
