How different is the idea of a smart city from JNNURM? Experts say JNNURM was focused on creating city-wide …

With so many cities around the world facing an acute need for water, “the hard path” will not be abandoned. It will always seem easier to bring water in, or to exploit a new source, than to move tens of millions of people, or completely redraw the map of agricultural production. The scale of the problem was suggested by research published in 2014 by The Nature Conservancy, an American charity. Its list of water-stressed cities was dominated by places in India and China—with Delhi second, Shanghai fourth and Beijing fifth. Mexico City came third. But top of the list was Tokyo. Other rich-world cities were also high up, including Los Angeles (eighth) and even London (15th).

Paul Woskov is collecting rocks. A growing number of granite and basalt squares perch on cabinet tops and shelves around his office, each a record of his latest experiment in drilling. Some show clean circles that fully penetrate the rock, while others hold glassy craters.

In India, where MC is a mark of religious affiliation, 41% of mostly Hindu men were concerned that MC was not part of their culture, while 30% were afraid of stigma or rejection [110]. MC has historic implications in India, where Muslim men were targeted for violence based on their circumcision status during the Hindu fundamentalist, anti-Muslim pogroms of 2002 and subsequent riots [177]. It has been suggested that MC in India might be more acceptable to STI clinic attendees than others [178].

The advantages of the new method are enormous as there are countless fibre-optic cables spanning the globe in the dense telecommunication network. Especially beneath megacities with high seismic hazards, such as San Francisco, Mexico City, Tokyo, or Istanbul, and many others, such cables could provide a cost efficient and widely spread addition to existing seismological measuring devices.

Renouard describes himself as the "furthest thing from an engineer," but that "the Lord needed somebody dumb enough not to know that (the Village Drill) wouldn’t work."

The main focus is expected to continue to be near-mine exploration at Endeavour’s two flagship mines (Hounde and Ity) and continue to develop organic growth opportunities such as Kalana, Fetekro, and other greenfield properties.

Both the boreholes at his 350-acre Hendy farm ran down to a trickle in mid June. For five weeks Aled and son Osian have been making round trips to a nearby river with a tanker lent by a local dealership.

Woskov laughs when he reveals that drilling engineers have a hard time believing his technology does not use the costly drilling mud they depend on. But, he explains, with a gyrotron, high-temperature physics will replace the mechanical functions of low-temperature mud, allowing drillers to extract rock matter through vaporization or displace the melt through pressurization. Similarly, the high temperature melted rock will seal the walls of the borehole, and the high pressure from the increased temperature will prevent collapse. In principle, because an increase in temperature in a confined volume will always result in an increase in pressure over local pressure, drillers could maintain the stability of a borehole to greater depths than possible with drilling muds.

Proven and Probable (P&P) reserves for continuing operations amounted to 8Moz at year-end 2018, down 0.6Moz or 7% over the previous year, mainly due to the time lag between resource delineation and reserve conversion. An updated reserve is expected to be published for the Hounde mine in mid-2019 following the 987koz maiden Indicated resource outlined at the Kari Pump discovery.

Today Is the Day — a band that comprises Nashville-based musician Steve Austin and whoever happens to back him at the time (including members of Mastodon at one point) — have long bridged the gap between metal and the rusty lead-pipe subtlety of Amphetamine Reptile-style noise rock, and in fact have released records through both AmRep and Relapse. Naturally, their sound always felt considerably heavier than the former, but much too weird to fit in with the latter. “Kill Yourself,” a standout among the many tracks on the band’s peak, Temple Of The Morning Star, is rife with ugliness and misanthropy, as well as Austin’s penchant for prog-influenced Fripp-ery and effects-pedal pranksterism. The sound is wild and slightly disorienting but ahead of its time, the sounds showcased here predicting similarly intense experiments from the likes of Botch and Daughters.
