I’ve only had a few minutes to play around with Volcanoids, but its tactile mechanical crafting systems reminded me a bit of Factorio at first. Gather metal ore, chuck it into the right machines, hit the buttons and out pops SCIENCE! Relaxing, right up until the first volcanic eruption. The game told me to hide in my initial home base – an armoured submarine – but instead I stayed above decks to see what would happen. Boom – the world shakes and an enormous cloud is blasted high into the air. And then a vast tsunami of super-heated dust starts rolling across the entire island. I slammed the door of my sub shut just as the wave was about to hit.

Much like Royal Trux, Helmet signed a million-dollar major label contract in the ’90s. But unlike Royal Trux, they actually made something marketable, if briefly; their 1992 album Meantime went gold, while “Unsung” became an alt-rock staple. The Helmet of debut album Strap It On is a bit less polished, however, their rough-hewn post-hardcore more aligned with their Amphetamine Reptile labelmates Cows and Halo Of Flies. While that album had its share of earworm moments (“Make Room,” “Blacktop”), its centerpiece is the odd, avant garde “Sinatra.” Moving away from the groove-metal sound that comprises most of the album, the band taps into a feedback-laden atmosphere more aligned with frontman Page Hamilton’s past work in Band Of Susans as well as his time spent wrenching beautiful dissonance as part of Glenn Branca’s guitar orchestra. Henry Bogdan’s bassline is a sinister backbone for the song beneath Hamilton’s haunting layers of guitars and sneer of “It’s Sinatra’s world, she just lives here.” It’s the least directly pummeling track on Strap It On, but easily the most ominous.

Borehole Geophysics is the deployment of geophysical sensing tools into a drilled hole. The sensing tool which is attached to a cable, provides measurement of nearby rock properties in the drilled hole, and sends the information via the cable to a control system unit on the surface where the data is collected and kept for further processing. In petroleum exploration, this method provides a “ground-truth” follow-up to larger geophysical surveys. Instruments interact with rocks in close vicinity, and can provide detailed information on properties such as rock type, permeability, density and velocity.
