AFTER RATTLING into the hillside outside Jerusalem for 7km, the little three-carriage railway reaches the end of the line, some 300 metres underground. The diminishing speck of light at the tunnel’s opening has long vanished altogether. This, for now, is as far as it goes. The German-Austrian contractor will eventually bore about 13.5km. But progress is fitful, depending on the rock being drilled through and whether it will need some artificial strengthening. The drill has already negotiated one large cave, complete with stalactites, which had to be reinforced with concrete. More such obstacles are expected. The contractor works non-stop, but the average progress made by Isabel, as their “double gripper” boring machine has been named, is just 22 metres a day. As its jaws grind into the wall of rock ahead, conveyor belts carry the rubble out to the tunnel’s opening.
It uses edge LED backlighting rather than a full array setup, but the KDL-40W905A has some of the best black levels we’ve seen from an LCD TV. Sat side by side with a plasma TV, we were hard pushed to decide which was best. There are barely any signs of clouding or backlight bleed, and it produced deeply black colours even during scenes that were otherwise brightly lit. The one exception is if you sit at an angle to the TV, as wider viewing angles compromise contrast and colour. Sat face on, however, this is about as good as LCD TVs get.

Even the most enthusiastic believers in direct air capture stop short of describing it as a miracle technology. It’s more frequently described as an old idea — “scrubbers” that remove CO₂ have been used in submarines since at least the 1950s — that is being radically upgraded for a variety of new applications. It’s arguably the case, in fact, that when it comes to reducing our carbon emissions, direct air capture will be seen as an option that’s too expensive and too modest in impact. “The only way that direct air capture becomes meaningful is if we do all the other things we need to do promptly,” Hal Harvey, a California energy analyst who studies climate-friendly technologies and policies, told me recently. Harvey and others make the case that the biggest, fastest and cheapest gains in addressing atmospheric carbon will come from switching our power grid to renewable energy or low-carbon electricity; from transitioning to electric vehicles and imposing stricter mileage regulations on gas-powered cars and trucks; and from requiring more energy-efficient buildings and appliances. In short, the best way to start making progress toward a decarbonized world is not to rev up millions of air capture machines right now. It’s to stop putting CO₂ in the atmosphere in the first place.

This specialist drilling company is currently operating three generations of surface drill rigs, the ROC L8 MK I and ROC L8 MK II supplied by Atlas Copco alongside the latest FlexiROC D65 machines from Epiroc. The recent delivery by Epiroc of three FlexiROC D65 surface drill rigs has bolstered this longstanding Northern Cape customer’s total drilling machine fleet to 51. Booysen Bore purchased their first FlexiROC D65s in 2013 which have up to now drilled in excess of 500 000 x 300mm diameter holes for nine Northern Cape solar farms, as well as a large number of blast hole meters in Northern Cape mines. Their fleet also includes a SmartROC D65 for blast-hole drilling as well as a few CS14 and CS1500 core drilling machines.
Borehole Geophysics is the deployment of geophysical sensing tools into a drilled hole. The sensing tool which is attached to a cable, provides measurement of nearby rock properties in the drilled hole, and sends the information via the cable to a control system unit on the surface where the data is collected and kept for further processing. In petroleum exploration, this method provides a “ground-truth” follow-up to larger geophysical surveys. Instruments interact with rocks in close vicinity, and can provide detailed information on properties such as rock type, permeability, density and velocity.
