Brosseau informs the team that sample 15 is not a bone fragment as hoped. It is metal slag, which is iron rich in sulfur, not usually found so deep underground. Sample 13 is also not leather as they team hoped, but rather plant material, possibly tree bark. Brosseau concludes that sample 19 is also likely tree bark, not leather. “I expected a whole lot more leather this year and these were the best pieces,” replies a disappointed Jack.

The KDL-40W905A is every bit the flagship TV thanks to a comprehensive set of Smart TV features and ample connectivity. It has four HDMI ports with support for Audio Return Channel (ARC) and MHL. ARC is a great feature, as it means you can play your TV’s sound through a home cinema amplifier or surround sound system, while MHL lets you display your smartphone through your TV. It also has SCART and component video inputs, digital optical and 3.5mm audio outputs and three USB ports. You can use one of the USB ports to add an external hard disk so that you can record TV programmes, while the others let you play media files using the integrated media player. We were able to play almost all of our multimedia files, although native DivX videos weren’t recognised. With Ethernet and integrated Wi-Fi, you can also stream files from a DLNA-compatible media server like a PC or NAS device.

Club conundrum: Backing it up. The Falcons flew under the radar last year. They started the season brilliantly then faded to eighth – but it was a positive campaign all round, with Dean Richards once again proving he is a top coach. Now to do it again and better. The squad has improved, big Maxime Mermoz is exciting, so now they must push for the top six and Europe.

Even the most enthusiastic believers in direct air capture stop short of describing it as a miracle technology. It’s more frequently described as an old idea — “scrubbers” that remove CO₂ have been used in submarines since at least the 1950s — that is being radically upgraded for a variety of new applications. It’s arguably the case, in fact, that when it comes to reducing our carbon emissions, direct air capture will be seen as an option that’s too expensive and too modest in impact. “The only way that direct air capture becomes meaningful is if we do all the other things we need to do promptly,” Hal Harvey, a California energy analyst who studies climate-friendly technologies and policies, told me recently. Harvey and others make the case that the biggest, fastest and cheapest gains in addressing atmospheric carbon will come from switching our power grid to renewable energy or low-carbon electricity; from transitioning to electric vehicles and imposing stricter mileage regulations on gas-powered cars and trucks; and from requiring more energy-efficient buildings and appliances. In short, the best way to start making progress toward a decarbonized world is not to rev up millions of air capture machines right now. It’s to stop putting CO₂ in the atmosphere in the first place.

Indeed, there’s still plenty more left to discover, including describing and understanding what exactly it is that’s living down there. Some are thriving, while others are those aforementioned “zombies” – organisms kept in a suspended, barely active state, just about surviving. What exactly is the true proportion of thrivers to survivors? Where to they get their energy from? How does life even move around below there, and what impact does it all have on the surface world?

"It was not by accident that the design looks the way it does, or that it is as simple as it is, that it moves the way it does," Mattson said. "The students worked to that."
