Best signing: Toby Flood – the prodigal son returns! After a stint in Toulouse, Flood is back on Tyneside and the answer to Geordie prayers. They have not had a classy fly-half, apart from one Jonny Wilkinson, since he left in 2008. He will run the show expertly and could be one of the signings of the season.
The key to installing a reliable and efficient borehole is understanding the hydrogeology of the site, and assessing the aquifer potential and aquifer properties. The geology of the UK is highly variable, but we are fortunate to benefit from some excellent aquifers on both a local and regional scale. The major Chalk, Limestone and Sandstone aquifers found in the South and Midlands in particular provide substantial yields, potentially in the region of 1,000m3/day or more. Good yields can be obtained from other formations too, and at a local scale there might be several options for developing an independent water supply.
No-wave, on some level, is synonymous with noise rock. Not the heavier, beefier, Amphetamine Reptile-style of knuckle-bleeding pigfuck, but a more primitive, post-punk permutation of it. Avant-garde composer Glenn Branca took the idea of no-wave — a movement based in part on the rejection of the commercial norms of popular music — and built it up into something bigger and eventually more “orchestral,” his performances often featuring a vast ensemble of players performing in odd tunings (including some of the artists featured on this list). “Lesson No. 2″ is a compact, miniature idea of Branca’s compositional style, as well as one with a compelling groove at the center of it. The ascending bassline pound might even pass for Gang Of Four for a brief moment, just before the eerie, oozing, wobbly guitars begin to cloud the space in a wave of dissonance and disorientation.
In addition, the ROC boasts the lowest fuel consumption per drilled meter compared to all other machines used by Booysen Bore in the blast-hole environment. So as far as we are concerned, when it comes to technology, reliability, ease of operation, manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency, the ROC machines are in a class of their own.”
Woskov, who joined MIT’s Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory in 1976 before becoming a founding member of the Plasma Fusion Center in 1979, is approaching his 40th anniversary at MIT. The first three decades of his tenure focused heavily on high-power far infrared scattering for measuring energy distribution of fast ions, the product of fusion reactions. The exploration took much longer than anyone anticipated, but when it eventually found success in Europe on the TEXTOR tokamak reactor, Woskov was left looking for a new direction.
This 1972 C-10 is driven by the husband-wife team (although the wife takes over most of the driving) and was never meant to be a full-blown race truck. Whatever their definition of “full-blown” is seems ambiguous; what IS “full-blown” if it isn’t a 500hp, LS1-powered C-10 with more tubing and coil-over action than a WRC Impreza?
It uses edge LED backlighting rather than a full array setup, but the KDL-40W905A has some of the best black levels we’ve seen from an LCD TV. Sat side by side with a plasma TV, we were hard pushed to decide which was best. There are barely any signs of clouding or backlight bleed, and it produced deeply black colours even during scenes that were otherwise brightly lit. The one exception is if you sit at an angle to the TV, as wider viewing angles compromise contrast and colour. Sat face on, however, this is about as good as LCD TVs get.

Gamebreaker: Anthony Watson – the Lions wing missed large chunks of last season with a broken jaw and hamstring trouble, but is set to be thrown back into the fire from the start. Lightning speed and a eye for the line, he’s a potent weapon out wide.

Even the most enthusiastic believers in direct air capture stop short of describing it as a miracle technology. It’s more frequently described as an old idea — “scrubbers” that remove CO₂ have been used in submarines since at least the 1950s — that is being radically upgraded for a variety of new applications. It’s arguably the case, in fact, that when it comes to reducing our carbon emissions, direct air capture will be seen as an option that’s too expensive and too modest in impact. “The only way that direct air capture becomes meaningful is if we do all the other things we need to do promptly,” Hal Harvey, a California energy analyst who studies climate-friendly technologies and policies, told me recently. Harvey and others make the case that the biggest, fastest and cheapest gains in addressing atmospheric carbon will come from switching our power grid to renewable energy or low-carbon electricity; from transitioning to electric vehicles and imposing stricter mileage regulations on gas-powered cars and trucks; and from requiring more energy-efficient buildings and appliances. In short, the best way to start making progress toward a decarbonized world is not to rev up millions of air capture machines right now. It’s to stop putting CO₂ in the atmosphere in the first place.
