I’ve only had a few minutes to play around with Volcanoids, but its tactile mechanical crafting systems reminded me a bit of Factorio at first. Gather metal ore, chuck it into the right machines, hit the buttons and out pops SCIENCE! Relaxing, right up until the first volcanic eruption. The game told me to hide in my initial home base – an armoured submarine – but instead I stayed above decks to see what would happen. Boom – the world shakes and an enormous cloud is blasted high into the air. And then a vast tsunami of super-heated dust starts rolling across the entire island. I slammed the door of my sub shut just as the wave was about to hit.

The original Martian drill, an ultrasonic percussive design, was tested in 2016 in Antarctica, which is often used for as a proxy for research of more far-flung places off the planet. That machine was designed to work in the low gravity of Mars, which makes it tough to apply enough force to bore into hard rock. Ultrasonic vibrations kick the drill into motion, creating a back-and-forth, oscillatory movement that hammers the drill bit down into ground. As the drill was expected to be carried on an unmanned Mars rover, it was also designed to work nearly autonomously.

"That was it, that’s what I saw in my dream," he recalled, tearing up. "That’s when I knew that this was supposed to happen."

It’s a Frankenstein like you’ve never seen before, and even when guys try – the results are usually dismal. In this case, however, progress appears to be well underway as two 1JZ Supra motors are married together (and acting more like cylinder heads with cylinder heads) and it doesn’t look like there’s going to be much room for disappointment when this one’s finished. The sheer technical prism of challenges is obviously amplified in complexity by the multiplication of moving components. But even if this build did nothing, it’s still awesome to see somebody take a go at it. This is the “spirit of hot rodding” at its finest.

But there was also good news: the dig was safe to continue using the three-ton hammer grab tool since the hole was not increasing in depth nor width.

The Bottom Line: 2015 Topps Football is an upgrade from the previous year. Centered around the 60th anniversary, the former legends are a great option and that applies to both the base variation and autograph sets. While the inserts can get a little ridiculous and start to blend together, the 60th Anniversary cards are a notable addition. As long as you are not expecting big hits from each box, 2015 Topps FB is a solid product.

Pacala equates the challenges confronting Climeworks and Carbon Engineering to what the wind- and solar-power industries faced in the 1970s and ’80s, when their products were expensive compared with fossil fuels. Those industries couldn’t rely on demand from the private sector alone. But some policymakers perceived tremendous environmental and public benefits if they could surmount that hurdle. Government investments in research, along with state and federal tax credits, helped the young industries expand. “Wind and solar are now the cheapest forms of energy in the right locations,” Pacala says. “The return on those investments, if you calculated it, would blow the doors off anything in your portfolio. It’s like investing in early Apple. So it’s a spectacular story of success. And direct air capture is precisely the same kind of problem, in which the only barrier is that it’s too costly.”
