After stopping at an oil well that had defied conventional drills, the men ordered field hands away and secretly brought out the bit and attached it to the pipe stem of the rotary rig. For the next 11 hours, the bit bored through 14 feet of solid rock, “a feat so miraculous for the time that drillers dubbed the mysterious device the “rock eater.”

Rescuers hope to find him at a depth of 236 feet, where a soil blockage has hampered efforts to save him.

The original Martian drill, an ultrasonic percussive design, was tested in 2016 in Antarctica, which is often used for as a proxy for research of more far-flung places off the planet. That machine was designed to work in the low gravity of Mars, which makes it tough to apply enough force to bore into hard rock. Ultrasonic vibrations kick the drill into motion, creating a back-and-forth, oscillatory movement that hammers the drill bit down into ground. As the drill was expected to be carried on an unmanned Mars rover, it was also designed to work nearly autonomously.

I also peeked in on Spider-Man Unlimited, but it’s been a few weeks since that game got any updates, so it can sit on the sidelines for now. Seriously, you’d think they’d have done something with that new PlayStation 4 game out and selling like mad. Well, what can you do? At least there’s plenty to do in the other Marvel apps right now, and it’s even kind of diverse since they’re not all hanging off of the same movie or anything at the moment. Until next time, True Believers!

Club conundrum: Stopping the rot. You almost feel as though Gloucester need to bottom out and be relegated, like Northampton and Harlequins were, if they are to realise doing the same thing each year will probably lead to similar results. Mid-table mediocrity frustrates the Shed every season. Key players have left and more will follow unless hard-nosed South African Johan Ackermann can whip them into shape. And fast.

It comes as the company is supplying around 25 per cent more water than usual to keep pace with a surge in demand caused by the hot weather.

Water Services Director Dr Martin Padley said: “Last year we promised we would keep people informed about any changes to their water supply, and that is why we have written to everyone in the area that will be affected. “From Sunday, July 15, people may notice a greater mineral content in their water supply as we increase the amount of water we take from the local boreholes.”

The Stooges spent much of their brief career provoking audiences and listeners, creating an outrageous spectacle that frequently ended violently. If beer bottles weren’t flying into their guitar necks — as can be heard on the infamous live document Metallic K.O. — then Iggy Pop would be using those bottles to slice up his own shirtless torso. Most of their second album, Fun House, captures that sense of danger and horror, though its closing track “L.A. Blues” is where the bottom drops out. A free-form psychedelic freak-out inspired more by the likes of free-jazz recordings like John Coltrane’s “Ascension” than early rock ‘n’ roll, “L.A. Blues” is a trip gone horribly wrong. In Robert Christgau’s initial review of Fun House, he questioned whether it was healthy to repeatedly subject himself to something so confrontational, and no point on the album sounds more damaged than “L.A. Blues.” It’s a violent primal scream, with additional bass groove.

- Maiden resource for the Kari West and Kari center discoveries, and further resource delineation for the Kari Pump deposit at Hounde expected in Q4-2019.

Finally I would just like to say to those complaining about the hits. Guess what this is not a hit based product. Read the product details and summary so you know what you’re buying.

The DCO give multiple examples of what they’ve found down there, but stress that most of these many millions have yet to be classified; they even refer to this enigmatic mass as “microbial dark matter.” Saying that, they do give a rather incredible example of what may be the most heat-resistant organism ever discovered: Geogemma barossii, a unicellular beastie that lingers on hydrothermal vents on the sea floor in temperatures of 121°C (250°F).

- Ore stacked decreased as the quantity of ore mined decreased with lower-grade stockpiles supplementing the stacked feed. Stacking at the heap leach operation ceased in mid-December.
