Governments can make carbon more expensive too. The Climeworks founders told me they don’t believe their company will succeed on what they call “climate impact” scales unless the world puts significant prices on emissions, in the form of a carbon tax or carbon fee. “Our goal is to make it possible to capture CO₂ from the air for below $100 per ton,” Wurzbacher says. “No one owns a crystal ball, but we think — and we’re quite confident — that by something like 2030 we’ll have a global average price on carbon in the range of $100 to $150 a ton.” There is optimism in this thinking, he admitted; at the moment, only a few European countries have made progress in assessing a high price on carbon, and in the United States, carbon taxes have been repudiated recently at the polls, most recently in Washington State. Still, if such prices became a reality, they could benefit the carbon extraction market in a variety of ways. A company that sells a product or uses a process that creates high emissions — an airline, for instance, or a steel maker — could be required to pay carbon-removal companies $100 per metric ton or more to offset their CO₂ output. Or a government might use carbon-tax proceeds to directly pay businesses to collect and bury CO₂. In the absence of any meaningful government action, perhaps a crusading billionaire could put all the money in his estate toward capturing CO₂ and stashing it in the earth.

Much like Royal Trux, Helmet signed a million-dollar major label contract in the ’90s. But unlike Royal Trux, they actually made something marketable, if briefly; their 1992 album Meantime went gold, while “Unsung” became an alt-rock staple. The Helmet of debut album Strap It On is a bit less polished, however, their rough-hewn post-hardcore more aligned with their Amphetamine Reptile labelmates Cows and Halo Of Flies. While that album had its share of earworm moments (“Make Room,” “Blacktop”), its centerpiece is the odd, avant garde “Sinatra.” Moving away from the groove-metal sound that comprises most of the album, the band taps into a feedback-laden atmosphere more aligned with frontman Page Hamilton’s past work in Band Of Susans as well as his time spent wrenching beautiful dissonance as part of Glenn Branca’s guitar orchestra. Henry Bogdan’s bassline is a sinister backbone for the song beneath Hamilton’s haunting layers of guitars and sneer of “It’s Sinatra’s world, she just lives here.” It’s the least directly pummeling track on Strap It On, but easily the most ominous.

Birnie gives acknowledgement to Booysen Bore’s fundamental role in the joint development of the machines from the ROC L8 MK I up to the state-of-the-art FlexiROC D65. Pieter adds that they were impressed by the fact that when they raised ideas, Atlas Copco not only listened but also responded to their requirements in the development of the machines which resulted in the ROC family becoming the preferred drill rigs for Booysen Bore.

Later, Marty and Doug Crowell meet with Joe in order to analyze the samples with more sophisticated equipment. Using a microscope capable of enlarging the samples to 400 times their actual size, a crystalline substance is discovered, which could be pigment, perhaps a Medieval or Renaissance ink.

Published since September 1843 to take part in “a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress.”

The machine’s small size and ability to work autonomously intrigued scientists with the BAS, who were looking for ways to drill into bedrock sitting at the bottom of a deep ice borehole. Antarctic scientists have portable drill systems for the relatively soft ice, but boring into the hard rock beneath presents a logistical challenge for scientists working on the remote continent, including shipping in a large drilling rig.

AISC amounted to $564/oz, well below the guided $580-630/oz range due to the outperformance of the operation and a lower than planned strip ratio in the second of half the year following a shift in the mine plan which delayed higher stripping to 2019.

The only telltale indication of what the engine actually is comes from the characteristic “hump” of the intake manifold, barely visible above the tangle of tubing.

“No miner is left in a mine, and Julen is now considered a miner,” said Juan Lopez Escobar, one of the engineers in charge of the rescue operation.

Worldwide 1 in 3 males are circumcised [1, 2], totaling an estimated 1.2 billion [2]. In the USA, medical MC is performed on 1.2 million newborns (56% of baby boys) in community hospitals annually [3, 4]. The true number is higher because some boys are circumcised in ambulatory facilities, a physician’s clinic or in a private home. In other developed countries infancy is also the most common time for performing MC, whereas in non-Muslim developing countries MC is usually part of coming-of-age ceremonies where risks are usually greater [5]. The largest number of circumcised males are Muslims (approx. 70% of circumcised males globally) [1].

United Utilities is currently constructing a new pipeline and water treatment works to bring soft water from Thirlmere into West Cumbria, however this scheme will not be complete until 2022.
