The year is 2014 and the location is Los Angeles; the event is Gymkhana and masses of people piled in to see what all the commotion was about – everybody wanted to see Ken Block’s new Mustang! New York trio Unsane have a discography full of blood-spattered album covers designed to trigger gag reflexes, which is a fair warning to all who dare venture into their unforgiving din. On the suitably titled “Body Bomb,” Unsane present their M.O. pretty clearly: simple, even bluesy riffs and basslines performed through several layers of distortion, and vocalist Chris Spencer wailing through a C.B.-quality mic like his fingernails are being ripped off. (Which, admittedly, would suit their vehicular-homicide-and-bathtub-full-of-blood aesthetic.) Their songs are melodic, and even carry a good groove at the heart of it all, but they certainly don’t make it easy. At Climeworks’s offices in Zurich, I asked Valentin Gutknecht, who was at the time the company’s business-development manager, if he could bury in Iceland my emissions from my plane flight from the United States to Zurich. He had a written agreement he could print out and give me, but it wouldn’t be cheap, he warned. The price was running about $600 a metric ton, meaning my flight would cost about an extra $700. But I was hardly the first person to ask him. The weekend before, Gutknecht told me, he received 900 unsolicited inquiries by email. The scientists sent pulses of laser light through an optical fibre, which was part of a 15 kilometer long cable deployed in 1994, within the telecommunication network on Reykjanes peninsula, SW Island, crossing a well-known geological fault zone in the rift between Eurasian and American tectonic plates. The light signal was analyzed and compared to data sets from a dense network of seismographs. The results amazed even experts: "Our measurements revealed structural features in the underground with unprecedented resolution and yielded signals equaling data points every four meters," says Philippe Jousset from the GFZ. He adds: "This is denser than any seismological network worldwide." After presenting preliminary ideas at several conferences since 2016 Philippe was told that the new method was a ‘game changer for seismology’. Although the method is not new in other applications (it is used for years in boreholes for reservoir monitoring), the team is the first worldwide that carried out such measurements along the surface of the ground for seismological objectives, and with such a long cable.
